Description

No. 70 on Ware Street is a hall house that has been converted into a residential home. It dates from the late 15th century to the early 16th century and features a timber-framed structure with plaster infilling and a plain tiled roof. This Wealden house has a hall that is either one long bay or possibly two bays, with a storeyed bay at each end; the left bay is longer. The building has two storeys, with both the right and left bays jettied, and the left gable end also jettied, supported by a moulded dragon-post. The studding is broadly spaced and includes tension braces, with arch braces supporting the flying wall plate and coving between the inner and flying wall plate. The roof is hipped, featuring gablets on both sides. There is a brick stack located on the front slope of the roof, off-centre to the left. The windows show irregular fenestration, with one small original window opening on either side of the central post in the left bay, and a 19th-century three-light casement in the unrestored right bay. A tall open-hall window has been restored to the right of the hall. The right end of the left bay features a 20th-century Tudor-arched door-head, with an original narrow Tudor-arched door-head immediately to its left. There is also a 20th-century brick lean-to on the right side. The building was undergoing works at the time of the re-survey.
