Description
Snowfield is a house located on Yeoman Lane in Bearsted, built in the 19th century and rebuilt around 1911 by A.N. Prentice in an early 18th-century style for Montagu Barstow, the husband of Baroness Orczy. The house features red brick construction with a plain tile roof and stands two stories high. It has a plinth, quoins, a cement-rendered platt band, a moulded wood eaves cornice, and a panelled stone-coped parapet. There are three stacks situated well behind the parapet, with one at each end and one towards the right of the center.
The front of the house has a regular arrangement of seven windows, consisting of six glazing bar sashes with thick glazing bars, cement cills, and segmental heads with gauged brick voussoirs and cement-rendered keystones. The two bays at either end project forward. A central Venetian window made of stone is located above, with a flagpole positioned above it. The doorcase features fluted pilasters that support an entablature adorned with triglyphs alternating with military emblems, topped by a triangular pediment.
At the rear on the left side, there remains evidence of an early to mid-19th-century service block. The interior retains its structure but shows no direct evidence of the 19th-century building. All detailing is carefully executed in an early 18th-century style and has remained virtually unaltered since its construction, showcasing high standards of craftsmanship throughout. This house served as the residence of Baroness Orczy from around 1905 to 1919.
