Description

Older Lodge is a house, now divided, dating from the early 19th century. It features colour washed roughcast and render with shallow pitched slate roofs that are hipped. The building has a half-H plan with the entrance front facing the rear. The central square block is flanked by projecting wings that enclose a courtyard. It is two storeys high with deep eaves on the cornice of the central block. There are rendered multiple stacks on the ridges of both the central and side ranges.

The central three-bay block has a pediment and is adorned with 12-pane glazing bar sash windows, three of which are on the first floor. Each flanking bay has one window on the first floor, and there are two windows on the return fronts of the wings facing the courtyard, with tripartite sashes at the re-entrant angles. The ground floor has similar window arrangements. The central entrance features double panelled doors beneath a modillioned hood, flanked by Bath stone Doric columns in antis, with quadrant walls behind. There is an additional half-glazed door to the left on the first floor, accessed by an external flight of wooden stairs, and another door on the ground floor of the right wing.

On the street front, the central three-bay block includes two flat-roofed casement dormers. The first floor has three 9-pane glazing bar sash windows, while the ground floor features two full-height tripartite glazing bar sash windows behind a tent-roofed balcony supported by thin, reeded columns with funnel capitals. The central block has curved ends that lead to the flanking wings, which are set back at the ends.
