Description
North and South Model Cottage is a pair of almshouses built around 1912, possibly designed by Frank Atkinson. The cottages are constructed of red brick with roughcast gables and feature plain tiled roofs, hipped over a projecting central bay. They are symmetrical and single-storey, with a central square bay that projects and gabled bays at each end. The windows are leaded casements, with four in total, where the outer ones are bowed. There are planked and ribbed doors set in recessed porches on either side of the central bay, supported by braced wooden piers across the front. Each gable has a wood latticed oval window in a stone surround, with an inscription in the corners that reads "W.W. 1912." Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
