Description
Nos. 4 to 8 on West Avenue are a row of almshouses built around 1912 by Frank Atkinson. The buildings are constructed from red brick and feature hipped plain tiled roofs with two central ridge stacks. They are single-storey and consist of five bays, with two casement windows under gauged heads in the second and fourth bays. The outer bays have recessed openings with cambered heads and stone coped keystones, and there is an additional casement window in the rear wall of the recess. The central opening has a moulded brick surround, with an ashlar keystone and a cornice band that contains another window and panelled doors to the left side of the porch. The left end of the main block features a bay set back that contains two more windows and a lantern with a sphere finial. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who worked with leading architects of the time.
