Description

Nos. 10 to 16 on West Avenue are a row of almshouses built around 1912 by Frank Atkinson. The buildings are constructed of brick and feature a hipped, plain tiled roof with panelled ridge stacks at the outer ends. They are single storey with tiled eaves and a hipped break to the left, where there is a lower bay set back at the left end. The facade includes four casement windows under gauged brick heads, additional casement windows in the outer, tiled, recessed bays at the ends, and two recessed openings in the centre. There are panelled doors on either side of the recesses. A central lantern with a globe finial is mounted on a bracket over the central opening.

Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley, known for Whiteley’s stores, to provide housing for thrifty elderly individuals. The village was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who collaborated with leading architects of the time.
