Description
Nos. 116 and 118 on Octagon Road are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by Frank Atkinson. They feature red brick construction with a plain tiled roof and a tall central ridge stack. The building is single storey and consists of four bays, with large casement windows in the two central bays and two wide, shallow arched entrances in the outer bays. The openings have gauged heads, and there are ashlar keystones above the entrances. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals, and it was laid out in an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who worked with leading architects of the time.
