Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Chestnut Crescent are a pair of almshouses built around 1929 by Maurice Webb. They are constructed of red brick and feature a plain tiled roof, with end ridge stacks that have rubbed brick coping at the gable ends. The buildings are single-storey with a parapet that breaks through the eaves on the outer bays. There are three bays, each with a three-light sash window in the outer bays. A central pier with a projecting pilaster leads to arched recess bays, which are accessed by a flight of two steps. The structure includes a three-bay trabeated colonnade supported by square brick piers and wooden lintels, with dado walls in the outer bays connecting Nos. 1 and 2 to Nos. 3 to 6 to the northeast. Chestnut Crescent was added to the original octagonal plan of Whiteley Village, with the buildings designed in a similar style. This listing is included for its group value only.
