Description

Nos. 7 and 8 Chestnut Crescent are a pair of almshouses built around 1929 by Maurice Webb. They are constructed of red brick and feature a plain tiled roof with end ridge stacks and rubbed brick coping on the gable ends. The buildings are single-storey with a parapet that breaks through the eaves on the outer bays. The structure has three bays, with a three-light sash window in each outer bay. There is a central pier with a projecting pilaster and arched recesses on either side, each containing a casement window. The part-glazed doors in the recess bays are accessed by a flight of two steps. A three-bay trabeated colonnade with square brick piers and wooden lintels connects the outer bays, with dado walls linking Nos. 7 and 8 to Nos. 3 to 6 to the southwest. Chestnut Crescent was added to the original octagonal plan of Whiteley Village, with the buildings designed in a similar style. This pair is included for its group value.
