112 AND 114, OCTAGON ROAD

Nos. 112 and 114 on Octagon Road are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by Frank Atkinson. They are constructed of red brick and feature a plain tiled roof with a tall central ridge stack. The building is single storey and consists of four bays, with large casement windows in the central two bays and two wide, shallow arch-headed entrances in the outer bays. The openings have gauged heads and ashlar keystones above the entrances. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide housing for thrifty elderly people. The layout was designed in an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who worked with leading architects of the time.
