Description

Nos. 1 to 15 on Circle Road are a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The buildings are constructed from red brick, featuring a sandstone plinth, quoins, and dressings. They have hipped roofs with tall, panelled central stacks along the ridge. The design includes central projections with a wide, open segmental area. The two identical blocks are connected by a central triple-arched colonnade, which has a pediment above and flanking urns. Each block is two storeys high with four windows, and the windows are casements, with the central first-floor windows designed in a "Venetian" style. The entrances are round arches set in panels located in the outer bays of the ground floor, with steps on each side leading to side entrances for the upper flats on the first floor.

This village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was laid out in an octagonal plan designed by Frank Atkinson, who employed prominent architects of the time.
