Description

Nos. 3 to 13 on North Avenue are a row of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The buildings are constructed of red brick with ashlar dressings at the center, set on a brick plinth. They feature a plain tiled roof with four tall ridge stacks. A central pediment is topped with a columned cupola resting on a rusticated square pedestal, which is adorned with flamboyant Baroque urns at each end. The central section has a one and a half storey arch that breaks through an ashlar string course below the pediment, which also serves as the lintel for the flanking doorways that have massive Baroque projecting keystones. The windows are all casements, with the second window from the center on both sides set behind a segment-headed arch. The outer bays have narrow segment-headed entrance arches. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
