Description
No. 2 and 4 Octagon Road is a pair of almshouses built around 1912, possibly designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. The building is constructed of red brick and features moulded brick pilaster quoins on the main block. It has a hipped pyramidal tiled roof with a hipped roof wing at the back. There is an end ridge stack on the wing and a tall stack with a projecting breast on the left-hand return front of the main block. The front elevation has two storeys, while the rear has one storey. The front consists of two bays with casement windows and a segment-headed entrance arch to the right on the ground floor. On the left-hand return front, there is a single casement on either side of the chimney breast on both floors, with an entrance arch to No. 2 Octagon Road to the left. The wing facing Octagon Road has a central casement, flanked on the right by an oculus and on the left by an entrance arch to No. 4. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores for thrifty elderly people and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
