Description
Nos. 6 and 8 on Octagon Road are a pair of almshouses built around 1912, likely designed by Sir Reginald Blomfield. They are constructed from red brick and feature a hipped tiled roof with two tall chimneys at each end of the ridge. The building has one storey and consists of six irregular bays. In the center, there are two circular windows (oculi) flanked by casement windows, with segment-headed entrance arches located in the outer bays. The wall surface projects forward in the center and at the window bays. Whiteley Village, where these almshouses are located, was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed in an octagonal layout by Frank Atkinson, who employed prominent architects of the time.
