Description
Nos. 1 to 11 on Hornbeam Walk are a group of almshouses built around 1912 by Sir Ernest George. They are constructed of red brick with sandstone quoins and dressings, featuring hipped plain tiled roofs and tall panelled central stacks. The design consists of three blocks arranged around a square, with arches at the corners connecting the blocks. The buildings are single storey and include four glazing bar sash windows, as well as outer entrance arches that have stone surrounds, impost blocks, and keystones. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's Stores to provide affordable housing for elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, who collaborated with prominent architects of the time.
