Description
No. 17 Circle Road is an almshouse built around 1912 by Sir Ernest Newton. It features red brick construction with rusticated quoins and has a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a hipped, plain tiled roof, which is topped with two ridge stacks. The building is two storeys high and consists of three bays. The windows are casements, and the central entrance is a panelled door flanked by two narrow casements, with a projecting hood above. The door is semi-circular arched, with flat casements on either side. Whiteley Village was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was laid out in an octagonal plan designed by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
