Description

Nos 6 and 8 East Avenue are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by architect Ernest Newton. They are constructed of red brick sitting on a brick plinth, featuring a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a hipped plain tiled roof. The buildings have a tall central, panelled ridge stack and two central casement windows, with flat-headed entrances located in the outer bays. A distinctive central diamond diaper pattern in black brick adds to their architectural interest. Whiteley Village, where these almshouses are located, was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide affordable housing for elderly residents and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, incorporating prominent architects of the time.
