Description

Nos. 9 to 11 on East Avenue are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by the architect Ernest Newton. They are constructed of red brick and feature a moulded wooden eaves cornice beneath a hipped plain tiled roof, with a central ridge stack. The buildings are single-storey and have two casement windows in the center, flanked by flat-headed entrances in the outer bays. Whiteley Village, where these almshouses are located, was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, utilizing prominent architects of the time.
