Description

Nos. 40 and 42 on Octagon Road are a pair of almshouses built around 1912 by architect Ernest Newton. They are constructed of red brick with grey brick banding between the paired central entrances. The building features recessed brick quoins and has moulded wooden cornices above hipped tiled roofs, which are topped with tall end stacks. It is a single storey structure with paired central entrance bays, flanked by casement windows in the outer bays. Whiteley Village, where these almshouses are located, was established by William Whiteley of Whiteley's stores to provide for thrifty elderly individuals and was designed on an octagonal plan by Frank Atkinson, incorporating leading architects of the time.
