Description
Manor house, dating from the 17th century, with extensions built in the 18th and 19th centuries and alterations made in the early 20th century. The building is constructed of limestone rubble with limestone- and marlstone-ashlar dressings, and has Stonesfield-slate roofs with ashlar stacks. The original plan was based on three units, which was then extended. The front of the original range is characterised by a double-gabled facade with three windows. At the first floor, it contains leaded stone-mullioned windows of 3, 2, and 3 lights, plus 2-light windows in the gables. The ground floor is asymmetrical, with a blocked doorway to the left of centre, flanked by a 4-light mullioned window, and a further 3-light window to the right. All windows have decorative stone labels. An early 19th-century range, projecting from the right side, has 2-light mullioned windows at the first floor facing left, above a mullioned window and a moulded doorway of 1926. The right side of this wing has leaded casements under flat arches. The left end wall of the main range contains tall leaded casements, and the rear of the building has a mix of old casements at the first floor and a 4-light stone-mullioned window with decorative leading at ground floor. A late 19th-century rear wing incorporates two re-set mullioned windows. A three-window range from the 18th century extends to the right of the front wing, with two 2-light windows and a doorway at ground floor, and casements of 1, 3 and 1 lights at first floor, all with flat arches and leaded glazing. A 19th-century single-storey range on the extreme right was raised in 1926 in a similar style, with a parallel range inserted in the angle with the rear wing. Internally, the house features Tudor-arched corner fireplaces, moulded-plank doors, re-used 17th-century oak panelling, and butt-purlin roofs.
