Description
The Grange is a vicarage, now a house, built around 1858 for Reverend F. Garrett by architect G.E. Street. It was extended in 1869 by C. Buckeridge and again in 1880 by E. Bruton. The building is constructed from coursed squared limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, featuring roofs of Stonesfield slate and plain tiles, along with stone stacks.
The structure has a complex Z-shaped plan and is designed in the Gothic style, comprising two storeys and an attic. The entrance front includes a central stone porch, a canted bay window on the left, and to the right, a gable above a trefoil-headed mullion-and-transom window on the first floor. The higher range that projects from the right is a later addition and features a turret in the angle topped with a timber-framed studio on the second floor, which has an octagonal pyramid roof. The garden front has four windows and returns to the left, showcasing a projecting gabled bay on the right, a two-storey canted bay window on the left, two additional gables, and a large buttressed stack. Several first-floor windows have trefoiled heads, and most windows include transoms. It is likely that all these features were designed by Street, except for the gabled verandah and the ashlar conservatory, which were added in the early 20th century. A further parallel rear range extends to the left.
Inside, the hall features pointed stone arches and a glass dome. A single-storey wing at the rear now serves as a private theatre.
