Description

Water Lane Cottage is a house, formerly subdivided, likely dating from the 17th century and remodelled in the early 19th century. It is constructed of marlstone and limestone rubble with wooden lintels, and has an asbestos-tile roof with brick stacks. The house follows a 3-unit through-passage plan. It is two storeys high, with a four-window front. A doorway is located on the extreme right, which may be an insertion, and the blocked passage doorway is to the right of the ridge stack. The windows are casements with 2 and 3 lights. The roof has a shallow pitch from the 19th century. An outshut has been added to the right side. Inside, there are two open fireplaces, one with an inglenook and bread oven, and both have flanking winder stairs. The doors are plank, with wooden latches. The building is included on the list for its group value.
