Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a Grade II listed building constructed in 1853 by architect G.E. Street, with the north aisle and tower added in 1869 by Charles Buckeridge. It is built from limestone ashlar and features artificial stone-slate roofs. The church includes a nave, chancel, a two-bay north aisle, a north-west tower, and a north-east vestry, showcasing Early English and Decorated architectural styles.

The chancel is characterized by shallow buttresses, a five-light traceried east window, and a two-light traceried window on the south side. The nave features groups of cusped lancets and, on the west side, three lancets beneath a sexfoiled circle. The north aisle has paired lancets, and the north gable wall of the vestry includes a shouldered-arched doorway beneath a two-light traceried window with two triangular-headed lights and a sexfoiled circle above.

The three-stage tower houses the main entrance, which is flanked by two pairs of shafts and an outer roll moulding. It has a saddle-back roof with large traceried three-light openings in the gable ends, lancets on the sides, and a band of quatrefoil openings below.

Inside, the chancel is distinguished by a transition from an arch-braced collar-truss roof to a seven-canted coupled-rafter roof. The north arcade features a quatrefoil pier and composite responds. The 19th-century fittings include brass communion rails and a low chancel screen with wrought-iron cresting. The stained glass in the east window dates from around 1872, while the two south windows were made around 1856 and 1859.
