Description

Shepherds Cottage is a house dating to the late 17th or early 18th century, with a ground floor likely of an earlier date. It is situated in Little Tew. The construction consists of mixed limestone and marlstone rubble, with wooden lintels, and a concrete plain-tile roof. The building has ashlar and brick stacks. Originally planned with three units, the front has a three-window façade, but the two bays to the left are taller and feature renewed three-light casement windows, along with a 20th-century roof dormer. The lower bay has casements of varying sizes. Both sections of the house were originally raised from single-story at an early point in their history. A canted bread oven, with a stone slate projection, overlaps the junction of the two sections and aligns with a double stack built on stone bases. A further brick stack is located on the left gable. The rear of the taller range has a large, full-height gabled stair tower and an original three-light leaded casement window. The entrance to the lower bay is at the rear. A county fire insurance plaque is affixed to the front wall. The interior has not been inspected.
