Description

New Bridge and flanking walls, located in Northmoor civil parish, is a bridge dating from the 14th century. It is constructed from coursed and dressed limestone, with some later repairs. The bridge features six pointed arches, which are separated by prominent cutwaters that create refuges for travelers. The groins of the central arches still show lateral ribs. New Bridge is noted as the most complete medieval bridge in Oxfordshire and was the site of skirmishes during the Civil War when Parliamentary Forces under Waller attempted to cross it to encircle Oxford and capture the king.
