Description
New Bridge and flanking walls, located in Kingston Bagpuize, is a bridge dating from the 14th century with later repairs. It is constructed of coursed and dressed limestone and features six pointed arches, which are separated by prominent cutwaters that provide refuges for travelers. The groins of the two central arches still have lateral ribs. New Bridge is recognized as the most complete medieval bridge in Oxfordshire and was the site of skirmishes during the Civil War when Parliamentary forces under Waller attempted to cross it to surround Oxford and capture the King. The bridge is scheduled as an Ancient Monument.
