Description

Sheepscote and Rest Cottages are located to the rear of the Golden Pheasant Hotel in Burford and Upton High Street. This building, originally a house and later an inn, features a 1970s replica front. It is constructed of ashlar with a Cotswold stone roof and is based on a 16th-century frame. The structure is a notable example of burgage development, with a long range to the northeast and various outbuildings in the rear courtyard. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a central gabled dormer and a brick chimney on an ashlar plinth. There are five windows with glazing bar sashes set in raised flat architraves. The long two-storey range at the rear includes converted stables that now serve as Sheepcote and Rest Cottages, which are used for staff accommodation. Inside, the most significant feature is the roof structure, which includes 1-2-1 arched-brace truss bays; the lower wind-braces are preserved in two bays, and the upper ones are also present in the north bay, though the south bay was not inspected.
