Description
The Burford Gallery and Classical House is a house that was formerly part of Shoo Cottage. It has a medieval front that was altered in the 17th and 20th centuries. The building is constructed of uncoursed rubble with a Cotswold stone roof that extends from Shoo Cottage and is hipped to the right. It has two storeys and an attic. A prominent feature is a heavily moulded 15th-century archway on the right, with the ends of joists from a sawn-off jetty above and part of a label. On the first floor, there are two windows: a three-light hollow chamfer mullion window on the left and a 20th-century four-light metal casement on the right. The ground floor features a mid-20th-century bowed shop window with glazing bars on the left. To the right, there is a projecting blind parapet wall leading to the forecourt of the Methodist Church. There is a long two-storey extension with a reset two-light monolithic lancet window. Inside, the front (west) room has heavy cross beams. The east cross wing of the rear wing contains an excellent early to mid-18th-century panelled room with raised and fielded panels, a modillion cornice, and an enriched overmantel, although it has a 20th-century fireplace. This wing also features a triple glazing-bar sash window in a raised flat surround with cock-beading.
