Description

The Corner House Hotel is a building that was originally a house, dating back to the early 16th century, but it was completely restored in the early 20th century. The ground floor is constructed of rubble, while the first floor features a timber frame and is topped with a Cotswold stone roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with four hipped dormers and rubble chimneys at each end.

On the first floor, the close-studded timber frame includes four windows, which are three- and four-light arch-headed lancets with moulded heads, and there are moulded strings above the ground floor. The ground floor has two windows of the four-light chamfered mullion type, which include king mullions. There is a central doorway with a Tudor arch, which is also a new addition.

The right-hand corner of the ground floor is chamfered back and features a mullion window set on the splay, along with two Tudor arches leading to the west and south, supported by a chamfered corner pier. The gabled return facing Witney Street also appears to be from the 20th century.

To the west, there is a three-bay, two-storey-and-attic extension that likely dates to the 17th century, although it has 20th-century casements. Additionally, there is another two-storey extension that may be from the 17th century or early 18th century. Inside, a ground floor room retains a massive spine beam, which is probably from the 16th century, featuring pyramidal stops.
