Description
Aubrey Newman is a house with commercial premises that dates back to the 16th century. It features a rubble exterior with a Cotswold stone roof and an off-ridge chimney on the left. The building has one storey and an attic. The ground floor has a coursed and squared rubble booth projection with a flat canopy, which includes two glazing-bar shop windows, one of which projects out. This is flanked by a re-set timber moulded flat arch doorway from the 17th century. To the left, there is a Tudor arch doorway with different mouldings.
Inside, there is a fragmentary ball-flower courtyard archway, which could date as late as the 15th century in Burford. There is also a good staircase from around 1700, featuring a wide handrail, well-spaced turned balusters, turned newel finials, and a cut string. The staircase is positioned against the spine wall to the west. The front room on the south side has heavily chamfered cross beams.
