Description
Wootton Peace Memorial is a First World War memorial built in 1920, located at the south-west corner of St Mary’s churchyard, overlooking Church Street. It is near the Church of St Mary, which is listed at Grade II*, School Cottages, which are listed at Grade II, and several Grade II-listed chest tombs.
The memorial is made of Somerset stone and features a square block sundial with a bronze gnomon on the south face and a Latin cross incised into the north face. The sundial has a moulded base and cap, topped with a globe, and is supported by a tapering octagonal shaft that rises from a chamfered octagonal base. This base sits on a square plinth with chamfered top corners and a moulded foot. The entire structure is placed on a three-stepped, square base made of coursed stone. Plaques are attached to the south face of the top and middle steps of the base.
At the base of the shaft, the south face features the inscription: PRO PATRIA/ 1914 – 1919. Below this, incised into the plinth, are the words: AS THE SUNNY HOURS DIRECT OUR THOUGHTS ABOVE/ SO THE LIVES OF VALIANT MEN/ LEAD US TO HIM WHO IS THE SUN OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
