Description
Griffin House and Stable is a public house, now a house, dating from 1691, although it may incorporate earlier fabric. The building is constructed of coursed squared marlstone with some limestone-rubble banding, featuring wooden lintels and a Welsh-slate roof with stone and brick stacks. It has a largely L-shaped layout.
The main three-window front, facing the road, is built of banded rubble, with a central plank door. To the right is a three-light casement window, and to the left a four-light casement. The first floor has casement windows of three, two, and three lights, with the window to the left featuring ovolo-moulded wood mullions and frame. A datestone to the left of centre is carved with drapery and inscribed "RB/1691". A stable bay is situated to the right, with a loft door and a stable door, though this section is partly obscured. The roof has stacks flaking the house bays, with a rendered stone base to the right stack.
The left gable wall reveals a further entrance and returns to a lower rear wing, which has a large three-light casement window above two smaller wood-mullioned windows. A stair tower in the angle of the ranges includes a blocked two-light, ovolo-moulded wood-mullioned window with intermediate bars, and a three-light window with chamfered mullions and bars. Most lintels are characterised by moulded chamfer stops. The interior was not inspected.
