Description

The stables and cart shed, located approximately 50 meters west of Lyneham Farmhouse, were built around 1843 and have undergone later alterations to the cart shed. The structure is made of roughly coursed limestone rubble and features a stone slate roof with overhanging verges and projecting purlin-ends on the stables, while the cart shed has a plain tiled roof.

The stables are two stories high with a symmetrical three-window front. The central doorway has dressed jambs and a three-centred arch, with a boarded door that includes external wrought-iron strap hinges and three vertical vents in the upper part. Flanking the doorway are slatted windows with segmental-arched ashlar heads. On the upper floor, there are smaller windows in the left and center bays, and a horizontal boarded loft door in the right bay, all featuring wood lintels. A decorative wrought-iron weathervane is positioned on the left gable end.

The cart shed is attached to the right gable end and has an open front consisting of six bays facing the yard, with three bays on the left partly enclosed by 20th-century blockwork. Inside the stables, the loft floor has been removed except for the chamfered cross beams, which are mortised for joists. The roof features a collar truss design in five bays. These buildings form the detached west range of a notable mid-19th century farmyard group associated with Lyneham Farmhouse.
