LYNEHAM HIGH STREET SP22SE (North side) 7/167 Stables and cart shed approx. 50m W of Lyneham Farmhouse (Formerly listed as 1.12.86 Farmbuilding 50m to W of Lyneham Farmhouse)

Stables and cart shed. Circa 1843 with later alterations to cart shed. Roughly coursed limestone rubble; stone slate roof with overhanging verges and projecting purlin-ends to stables, plain tiles to cartshed. Stables. 2 storeys. Symmetrical 3-window front. Central doorway with dressed jambs and 3-centred arch. Boarded door with external wrought-iron strap hinges and 3 vertical vents in upper part. To either side a slatted window with segmental-arched ashlar head. On the upper floor a smaller window in the left and centre bays with a horizontal boarded loft door in right bay, all with wood lintels. Decorative wrought-iron weathervane to left gable end. Cartshed attached to right gable end. Open front in 6 bays facing yard, 3 bays to left partly enclosed with C20 blockwork. Interior of stables. Loft floor removed except for chamfered cross beans, mortised for joists. Collar truss roof in 5 bays. The buildings form the detached west range of a good mid-C19 farmyard group (q.v. under Lyneham Farmhouse) [2617]
