Description

The property comprises a farmhouse and attached farmbuildings, dated 1843, with later alterations. The farmhouse is constructed of roughly coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof, moulded coped verges to the gables, a hipped roof to the rear, and a corbelled eaves cornice to the short central range at the front. The main range is one room deep and has two storeys and an attic. The projecting shaped gable to the right features a three-light mullioned and transomed ovolo-moulded window to the ground floor, a similar two-light mullioned window to the first floor, and a slightly projecting window surround housing a narrow rectangular window to the attic. The short, central range has a recessed narrow rectangular window on the first floor, directly above a gabled porch displaying the datestone "AD/1843", a ball finial to the apex, and a hoodmould to the outer Tudor arch. The porch has a six-panel inner door, the upper panels now glazed, with a Tudor-arched wreathed and radiating fanlight. A slightly projecting gable to the left has similar windows to the right gable, except that these are cavetto-moulded, and the window surround to the attic does not project. A canted bay window is present on the left return, and there’s a prominent ridge stack. The right gable has an external lateral stack to the right, featuring twin diagonal shafts with moulded capping. A cellar is situated beneath the building. All windows have either cast-iron or leaded lights. A prominent external stack is on the back wall on the left, adjacent to contemporary gabled service ranges projecting to the rear. The longest of these is linked to the west range of farmbuildings, which connects with a two-bay cart shelter with a central passageway on the north. This is abutted on the west side by a long barn with segmental-headed plank doors and windows on both floors, and two lean-to cart entrances (with opposing entrances to the south) on the north side. A hip-roofed range projecting at right angles to the south towards the east end has an external lateral stack with a tapering shaft. Further to the west, also at right angles to the south of the barn, are attached cowhouses with a short range projecting at right angles to the west. The roofs of the farmbuildings mainly have concrete tiles, but the buildings are largely unaltered externally. Inside the large barn, there is a mixture of king posts and raking struts from tie beams to principal rafters, supporting a trenched-purlin roof. A loft is present in the four west bays and the floor is of 19th-century quarry tiles. Gearing for a former threshing machine remains in the three eastern bays, although all other machinery is gone.
