Description
A house, dating from circa 1690, later converted into two separate cottages in the mid-18th century. The exterior is built of Jurassic limestone, with a roof of machine tiles and Stonesfield slate. The south elevation has a two-window arrangement. A half-glazed door is located to the right of a 3/3 horned sash window. Two 2/2 horned sash windows are present on the first floor. The southeast corner is rounded. The gabled roof is hipped to the south, with a slatestone covering and a gabled dormer containing a 2-light casement window. The east elevation has one blocked window on the Corner Cottage side and three windows on the China Cottage side: two 2-light Crittall casements beneath a continuous timber lintel, and one 1/1 horned sash. A 2-light Crittall casement is located on the first floor. Stonesfield slate covers the northern half of the roof, and a gabled dormer is present. A central ridge stack rises from the roof. The west elevation includes a 20th-century extension on the south side and a single-storey lean-to on the north side, both featuring casement windows. There’s also a 2-light attic casement in the north gable end. Internally, a central stack contains a wide, chamfered stone fire surround on the south side and a blocked fire opening to the north. Two winder staircases are located in the lobby east of the stack, one serving Corner Cottage and one serving China Cottage. The ground floor rooms have chamfered bridging beams and joists. The first floor of China Cottage features a chamfered bridging beam with tongue stops at the east end; the corresponding beam in Corner Cottage has run-out stops. The original roof structure remains intact, comprising principals, collars, one tier of upper butt purlins, and one tier of lower taper-tenoned purlins.
