Description

36 and 37 The Avenue are two small houses located in Great Tew. They date from the 17th century, with alterations in the 18th century, enlargement and remodeling in the early 19th century, and partial rebuilding in the 20th century. The houses are constructed of coursed squared marlstone and have thatch roofs with 20th-century stacks.

The buildings have a two-unit plan and consist of one storey plus an attic. No. 37, on the left, was originally built in the 17th century but has been completely rebuilt, retaining only the large gable stack on the left and a section of curved wall that once contained a spiral staircase. The new front wall features 19th-century stone-mullioned windows with two and three lights in their original positions, along with a 20th-century outshut on the left.

No. 36, on the right, has an arched doorway with lozenge label stops and a three-light stone-mullioned window, both of which are 19th-century additions to the 17th-century lower section of the front wall. The upper section, from the 18th century, has leaded half-dormer casements, and there is a 19th-century bay added on the right. The rear of No. 36 has two additional mullioned windows that may be original. Inside, both houses feature open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers and bread ovens. The lower part of No. 36 was likely originally a single-storey stable for No. 37.
