Description

Southfield Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located on Manor Road in Sandford St. Martin. Constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar dressings, it has a Stonesfield-slate roof and ashlar stacks. The house is arranged in a roughly L-shaped plan. The front facade, with two windows, features a central doorway flanked by four-light stone-mullioned windows with labels on both the ground and first floors. The left gable wall has aligned mullioned windows of four, three, and two lights. A two-window rear wing, returning to the left, includes three-light mullioned windows and a separate entrance. The main roof has gable stacks, and both ranges have a central ridge stack, all featuring plinths and moulded caps. Inside, there is a vaulted cellar, a winder stair leading to the attic, and a trenched-purlin roof. The house may have originally been a lobby-entry plan.
