Description
Five Chimneys is a farmhouse, now a house, that likely dates from the 17th century to early 18th century, with alterations made in the late 18th to early 19th century. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble, featuring wooden lintels and some ashlar dressings, topped with Stonesfield-slate roofs and ashlar stacks. The building has a T-shaped plan and stands two storeys high.
The road front has an irregular five-window layout, with two bays on the left that are higher and feature small 12-pane sash windows on the first floor, along with casements and an entrance below. The large central casement has an old chamfered lintel. The lower section includes two 3-light casements (one with leaded glazing) and a blocked window on the first floor, while the ground floor has two smaller sashes and two larger late 18th to early 19th century sashes with ashlar dressings. The steep-pitched roof has stacks flanking each section.
At the rear, the lower section has additional 16-pane sashes and leaded casements on the first floor, while the higher section features a tall gabled stair projection. The five-window rear wing primarily has leaded casements and a doorway, along with an end outshut. A stone porch, located in the angle of the ranges, is an addition from the early 20th century.
Inside, there is an early 18th-century panelled room on the first floor, with panelled shutters in other rooms. Chamfered tiebeams suggest work from the 17th century.
