Description
These three cottages, known as Clematis Cottage, Hound Cottage, and The Cottage, date to the late 17th or early 18th century and have been altered since their original construction. They are built of coursed rubble stone with a Cotswold stone roof. There are three ridge chimneys, two of brick and a larger one of brick and ashlar, located to the right of centre. The layout suggests possible mediaeval origins, although this is unlikely given their location. The two northern cottages are entered from an alley. The cottages have two storeys and an attic, built upon a chamfered plinth. Three gabled dormers are visible. The window arrangement is irregular, with 2- and 3-light casement windows featuring timber lintels; the two central windows on the first floor have moulded lintels. Ledged doors are interspersed with the ground floor windows, with the right-hand door leading onto the alley and having a chamfered lintel.
The interior of Clematis Cottage retains a good Tudor-arch fireplace with panelled spandrels on both the ground and first floors, alongside wide-chamfered beams. Within the roof structure, there is a re-used collar truss which shows evidence of wind-bracing. The cottage numbered 188, formerly including a bakehouse, retains a newel staircase next to the concealed front chimney.
