Description

This is a mid-to-late 17th-century house with attached outbuildings and dwellings, now used as a shop and four dwellings. It is located in West End, Witney. The building is constructed of coursed limestone rubble with a gabled concrete tile roof and end stacks finished in stone and brick. It has a U-shaped plan with rear wings. The main block is two storeys and an attic, with a seven-window front. A timber lintel spans the central carriage entry, and all other openings have timber lintels. A 20th-century door and window are visible, along with a 19th-century three-light casement above the through-entry and 19th-century six-pane sash windows to the left. A blocked door with a fanlight is set within a moulded wood architrave with a bracketed flat hood to the left. Two gabled roof dormers are present. A gabled stair turret is located at the rear. An early 18th-century two-storey range of similar materials is set to the rear left, featuring a ridge stack finished in stone and brick. A mid-18th-century range of similar materials is to the rear right, two storeys and four windows wide, with 20th-century doors and windows. A truncated early 17th-century range also at the rear right has 20th-century doors and windows. A further early 17th-century range to the rear right, also of similar materials, is one storey and an attic with a two-window range. The interior features stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a quarter-turn staircase with winders to the right, and a collar-truss roof. Only a partial inspection of the interior was possible, and the interior of the rear wings has not been inspected.
