Description

The summerhouse, located approximately 200 metres northwest of Sandford Park, dates from the late 18th century. It is constructed of timber and features a cladding and roof made of Stonesfield slate. The design includes back-to-back three-quarter circular alcoves in a Chinoiserie style. Each alcove has a round-headed archway topped with a shallow pediment, and the spandrels and pediment are filled with fretwork scrolls. The slate-clad sides are serpentine, and the roof is topped with a square cupola that has a Chinese-trellis balustrade, an open fretwork frieze of bells, and an ogee roof with a wooden finial. Inside, each alcove boasts a wooden vault radiating from a central rosette and is furnished with white Chinoiserie curved benches that have trellis backs and footrests. The summerhouse is situated between two lakes within the gardens of Sandford Park.
