LITTLE FARINGDON GARDENERS COTTAGE NEAR LANGFORD HOUSE

House. Early C19. Roughly coursed and dressed local limestone rubble with stone angle quoins and window sills but with red brick dressings to the window surrounds; stone slate roofs (several areas of slate missing at time of inspection, July 2003) with stone-coped verges, kneelers and parapet. PLAN: Main range runs parallel with road with 2 full-height gables to the front linked by a single-bay centre section; lower 2-storey range set back to left. EXTERIOR: Symmetrical front elevation has 3-storey gables to left and right, both with sash windows on each floor, 16-paned to ground floor, 12-paned to first floor and 6-paned to attic; lower central linking section has 12-paned sash window placed directly above gabled porch with elliptical outer arch and recessed door; integral end stacks to main range with red brick shafts above ridge. Plain rear elevation with further sash windows and tall roughly central 8- paned fixed-light window presumably lighting stair. Lower two-storey 'service' range set back to left of main range. INTERIOR: Not inspected. HISTORY: Shown with the adjoining walled garden on 1841 Tithe Map; Oxfordshire Record Office (S) 162.
