Description
Gardener's Cottage near Langford House is a house dating from the early 19th century. It is built of roughly coursed and dressed local limestone rubble, featuring stone angle quoins and window sills, with red brick dressings around the window surrounds. The roof is made of stone slate, although several areas of slate were missing as of July 2003, and it has stone-coped verges, kneelers, and a parapet.
The main range of the house runs parallel to the road and has two full-height gables at the front, connected by a single-bay central section. To the left, there is a lower two-storey range that is set back. The symmetrical front elevation features three-storey gables on both sides, each with sash windows: 16-paned on the ground floor, 12-paned on the first floor, and 6-paned in the attic. The central linking section has a 12-paned sash window directly above a gabled porch, which has an elliptical outer arch and a recessed door. Integral end stacks with red brick shafts rise above the ridge of the main range. The plain rear elevation includes additional sash windows and a tall, roughly central 8-paned fixed-light window, likely illuminating the stairway.
The lower two-storey service range is set back to the left of the main range. The cottage is depicted alongside the adjoining walled garden on the 1841 Tithe Map held at the Oxfordshire Record Office.
