Description
This is a house, dating to the early 18th century, with later 18th-century additions. It is located on Thames Street in Eynsham. The house is constructed of uncoursed limestone rubble with a gabled stone slate roof. It has a brick rear lateral stack dating to the 19th century, and a brick right-end stack dating to the 18th century. The original plan was based on two units. The house has two storeys and an attic, with a two-window front. The windows have timber lintels above a central 20th-century door and 20th-century casements, and there is a 20th-century roof dormer. A two-storey bay to the right was built in the mid-18th century and features a flat stone arch over the ground-floor window. A two-storey range to the rear also has flat stone arches over its openings. An outbuilding, originally used as a granary and stable, is attached to the rear and is constructed of similar materials. Inside, the room on the left has a chamfered beam, a chamfered bressumer, and stone jambs surrounding the open fireplace. The room on the right has chamfered joists and stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops, a chamfered bressumer, and a chamfered bressumer over the open fireplace. The roof structure comprises three bays. Historically, the building was the Maltster and Shovel public house in the 19th century. The building is included for its group value.
