Description

The Jolly Sportsman Public House, originally a house, dates from the late 17th century and underwent alterations in the early 18th century, with further extensions added in the mid 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled artificial stone slate roof with brick stacks at either end. The building has a two-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic. The front has a symmetrical three-window range that was remodeled into a two-window range in the early 18th century. A mid 19th-century doorway with a bracketed flat hood is located to the right. There is a flat stone arch over a leaded cross window, with a leaded light above a mid 19th-century four-light window and a timber lintel over an early 18th-century four-light leaded and transomed window. A 20th-century roof dormer is also present. To the right is a 17th-century extension, which was extensively remodeled in the mid 19th century, made of limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. This extension is attached to a mid 19th-century stable range that has a Welsh slate roof and extends along Acre End Street. Inside, there is a chamfered beam to the left and stop-chamfered beams and joists in the remodeled room to the right.
