Description
The Large Thatched Cottage and The Small Thatched Cottage are a pair of houses, originally a single dwelling, located in Eynsham. The rear section of the building dates to the early 17th century, while the front range was constructed in 1725, as indicated by a datestone reading "K/IS/1725".
The front range is built of coursed limestone rubble with a hipped thatch roof and a stone stack at the right end. It has a lobby-entry plan, originally a single unit but later extended. The two-storey, three-window facade features timber lintels over a 20th-century door with a thatched porch, and 20th-century casement windows. Chamfered stone lintels and jambs are visible around a two-light casement in a blocked opening on the left. A workshop or bay to the right has a timber lintel over a blocked doorway. Inside, there’s a cased beam on the right and a stop-chamfered bressumer above a large open fireplace on the left. A small fireplace is present on the first floor. The roof is characterised by butt-purlins.
The Small Thatched Cottage, the rear range, is constructed of similar materials with a brick end stack. It is one storey and has an attic, with a two-window range. A rear window features a three-light, ovolo-moulded wood-mullion design. The interior was not inspected, but is likely to be of interest.
