Description

Wilcote Grange is a farmhouse, now a house, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations made in the mid-to-late 18th century and the 19th century. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble, with a gabled and hipped roof covered in artificial stone slates. A stone stack is located on the left end, with ridge and end stacks on the right wing. The house originally had a double-depth layout. It is two storeys and an attic, with a symmetrical three-window front on the left side. A late 19th-century round arch frames a four-panelled door. Above this is a late 19th-century tripartite sash window with glazing bars. Two gabled blocks are situated at the rear, remodelled in the 19th century; the right side of the building has a four-window range with two mid-to-late 19th-century canted bay windows, each featuring French windows and sashes, along with late 19th-century four-pane sashes and gabled roof dormers. An 18th-century outshut is located to the rear left. A side range to the left of the front has a stone slate roof and a stone end stack; on the first floor is a late 18th-century six-pane sash and a 19th-century two-light casement. Inside, the house features late 17th-century butt-purlin roofs with chamfered purlins. A segmental brick arch sits above a large open fireplace, which includes a bread oven to the left. A 19th-century dog-leg staircase with a landing has been installed. The first-floor landing displays reset mid-18th-century door architraves with a heavy egg-and-dart moulding, alongside 19th-century panelled doors. A first-floor room on the right has an early 19th-century fireplace with a mid-18th-century scrolled architrave.
