Description

Lower Farmhouse is an early to mid-18th century farmhouse, situated at a right angle to the road. It is constructed from coursed limestone rubble with a stone slate roof. The building follows a three-unit "T" plan. The south-east front has integral brick end stacks, with the top of the right-hand stack rebuilt in the 20th century, and two brick ridge stacks. It features three gabled dormers, each with a small pane two-light wooden casement window. Five irregularly spaced windows are present; these are boxed glazing bar sashes with stone cills and wooden lintels, with a ground-floor tripartite sash window on the right. A 19th-century two-panelled half-glazed door, with side lights, is set within a late 19th or 20th-century gabled wooden porch with side benches, located in the second bay from the right. A small staircase window is positioned to the left of the door. A later, one-storey service range adjoins the right side, and has two small two-light wooden casement windows. A gabled wing extends to the rear, incorporating an early 20th-century porch in the angle. The interior has not been inspected. Evidence suggests the farmhouse was enlarged in the 18th century, as indicated by a straight joint to the left of the front door. The building is part of a complete farmstead group, which includes adjoining barn, stables, and garden wall.
