Description

The Church of St Peter is a Grade II* listed building located in North Leigh, Wilcote. It dates from the late 12th century, with alterations made in the mid 13th and early 14th centuries. The church was restored in 1858 by H. Woodyer and again in 1868 by A.W. Blomfield. It is constructed of coursed limestone rubble and features a gabled stone slate roof.

The church consists of a nave and chancel. The chancel has small buttresses that continue as string courses. The east window, which is a late 13th century three-light trefoil-headed design, was restored and enlarged by Blomfield. There is a 14th century Caernarvon-arched doorway on the north side and a mid 13th century pointed chamfered lancet on the south side. The nave includes a north porch added by Blomfield and a 2-light Curvilinear window on the north side. On the south side, there is a 14th century offset buttress, an early 14th century two-light Curvilinear window set in a blocked 13th century archway, and a late 12th century blocked doorway with a billeted and roll-moulded arch supported by jamb shafts with cushion capitals.

The west gable features 14th century offset buttresses and early 14th century two-light Curvilinear windows separated by a central buttress that rises to a bellcote with a cinquefoiled niche. Inside, there is an early 14th century trefoiled piscina with a credence shell and a plain aumbry in the north wall. The mid 13th century double-chamfered chancel arch is supported by head corbels and includes a squint in the south wall. The church also contains a mid 19th century octagonal font, pulpit, and pews, along with a mid 19th century waggon roof in the chancel and a 3-bay arch-braced roof with traceried and foliate-carved spandrels. There are mid 19th century memorial tablets and stained glass in the east window.
