Description
Lower Grove Ash Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the mid 17th century, with enlargements in the 18th century and alterations in the early 19th century. It is constructed of coursed squared marlstone and features roofs made of Stonesfield slate, with both ashlar and brick stacks. The building has a two-unit lobby-entry plan that has been extended to four units and then to an L shape. It stands two storeys plus an attic.
The right half of the four-window main range is the earlier section and includes a central doorway with a six-panel door. To the right of the door is a three-light ovolo-moulded stone-mullioned window with a label, while a larger three-light mullioned window is located to the left. Above these, there is a three-light lattice casement and a small single-light window over the door, all of which likely date from the early 19th century and feature labels. The roof has a central stack and a gabled roof dormer to the left.
To the left, there are added bays with further casements, one of which has a label. A lower service wing projects from the left and includes a slated wooden verandah facing right. At the rear of the earlier bays is a short wing that contains another three-light ovolo-moulded mullioned window in its outshut. The rear of the later section features some segmental-arched openings with projecting keyblocks.
The interior has not been inspected but is noted to have stop-chamfered beams at the first floor and in the later bays, an attic stair over the lobby, a chamfered and stopped doorframe leading to the rear wing, and a rear stair projection incorporated into the slightly later rear wing. It also includes two rows of butt purlins.
