Description
The Boltons and West Cottage is a farmhouse that has been converted into two cottages. It dates from the early 18th century, with remodels in the late 18th to early 19th century and extensions added in the 20th century. The building is constructed of coursed squared marlstone with wooden lintels and has a roof made of Stonesfield slate, featuring stone and brick gable stacks. Originally designed with a 3- or 4-unit plan, it has been altered into two 2-unit cottages with later additions. The structure is two storeys high. The left side of the four-window front is the oldest part and features leaded cross windows. The later sections include adjacent plank doors and leaded casements, with two-light windows in the right bay and a single-light window above the doors. The 20th-century end outshuts on both sides project forward and have stone-ball gable finials. The rear of the building shows remnants of a chamfered stone window surround. Inside, there are limewashed chamfered beams and joists. The property was formerly known as Mansion House farm and has been in existence since at least 1767.
